double page spread layouts

This layout is a bit too confusing for me to like it. I like having the one image on the side however I don't like the way the text is set out around the headline.
I don't like all the over lapping on this layout and it has hardly any text on this page, its all about the images.
I like this design because its got a balance between images although I don't like the over lap of the images.

This is a very simple layout a bit too simple for my liking, every magazine uses this layout as a standard layout. I would want something a bit more original

I like this layout more then the rest. There are a lot of images yet there is a lot of text too. I think I'm going to use this as my layout.

The name

I came up with the name for my magazine by describing my magazine to my media class and they all said words they related with my magazine or music. We came up with things such as curly, forward, freaky, cheeky, fridge, topper etc etc
However someone came up with the word Tonic, and everyone agreed that would be the best name for my magazine. So my magazine is called Tonic.

My act

My old act was going to be called Polly Anna and it was going to be an interview about her life. However this doesn't fit in with the look of my magazine, it makes it seem like a big artist which is not what my magazine is about. So unfortunatly I had to get rid of Polly Anna.

My act is called Everett, as his name is Samuel Everett so taking his last name as the acts name. He is indie music, but along the lines of Jamie T, Jack Penate, Just Jack, The View kind of music. He's 19 years old, just released an album called Everett and the album art is shown above, he is unsigned and produced this album himself in a studio which he rented. He comes from Brighton and does a few gigs there a year to try and get himself noticed. He is a big hit on Youtube and Soundcloud. He's a normal guy, and he's just got an offer from a few record labels. So my magazine will be the first magazine to report on him and have all the information about him before any other.

About my photo shoots.

The First photo shoot I did was with my friend Polly, I felt she had the right feel for my magazine at that point in time. However as I looked back on the photos and the way my magazine is going I felt she and the photos I had taken were too clean and unlike an unsigned act. The white background and the dress made it look too mainstream for my magazine.

My second photo shoot I decided to take photos outside, with Sam as my model. He gives an edgier and different feel the the magazine. And it meant I could get different backgrounds and different heights easier. I feel this photo shoot was more successful and I have a few more photos that are front cover material.

About my magazine

I have decided my magazine is going to be about new, up and coming, possibly unsigned acts and about live concerts.
It'll be like NME in the way it influences audiences and how it looks and feels. However it will only deal with smaller acts, ones to watch and live concerts around the country. It won't be as agressive as NME but will be as enthusiastic about music. It'll be so enthusiastic it will have small local bands that no one has heard of, and will predict who's going to be big in the future. It will take a lot of the acts from places such as youtube, myspace and soundcloud. It will be an internet magazine, with a printed high street copy too.
I will be aiming for a student audience, the type of audience that wants to have fun and has no ties.

I have had an idea to sell my magazine to the colleges and universities, so it will reach the correct audience and would hopefully maximize circulation of the magazine. I would also put it in all the high street shops as well. I will price my magazine between £2-£3 however to attract people away from the bigger magazines such as NME, Q etc etc I would have an introductory price of £1.50.

analyzing NME front cover

After looking at many music sites and looking at a few bigger acts that have been down to The de la warr pavilion, and that doesn't happen down here. I heard that they had a new booking agent... so I have considered to do an article on the De La Warr Pavilion in my double page spread possibly. There's been acts such as Vampire Weekend and Kate Nash down to perform, and theres more live acts being booked all the time, so I'm going to get in contact with the De La Warr and try to get an interview or something, then I have more then one possibility for an article, and it could possibly make my magazine a local magazine.

Research about NME

I'm researching NME because I think it will be my magazines biggest competitor.

NME is the most popular music magazine in the UK, I believe this is because it has been running for the longest time and it deals with every type of music genre.

The editor is Krissi Murison, she joined NME as a staff writer in 2003, then became the first female editor of NME in 2009. From what I've looked at the cover pictuers and style have changed since they changed editior. Look at the examples below:

This is a 2008 copy with the old editor Conor McNicholas. Its a very manly colours, the red standing out and using the normal NME sign. They're using old bands that had a mainly male audience. This I would suggest is aimed at a male audience more.

This front cover however is still manly but accesisble to a female audience too. The pink is girly and suggests sex appeal, so would appeal to a girl fanbase. The band is a popular band with a mainly female audience. The photo makes them look like they're above us and too good for us, making the audience intrigued to what they have to say. And the witty tag line underneath makes the reader thinks the article is going to be entertaining.

So the style has changed from with the editor.

The target audience of NME is men aged 17-30, that shows in the old covers, where as the newer ones look sligthly more as if they were trying to attract female attention. I have got this information from the advertising pack on the IPC website

The frequency of the magazine is weeky, the circulation of the magazine is 33, 875 Jan- June 2010 and the readership 325,000 July 09- June 2010

NME is not just a magazine however, its also a website, television, radio and it holds a number of live events.

The magazine publisher is IPC
